Shafiqur Rahman, Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and Leader of the Opposition, said the July uprising would be protected even at the cost of lives. He warned that if the spirit of July does not survive, neither the previous interim government, the national election, nor the newly formed government would have any existence.

He made the remarks on Friday (March 6) while speaking as chief guest at an iftar gathering organized by Khilafat Majlis at Fars Hotel and Resort in Paltan, Dhaka.

Shafiqur Rahman said the July spirit must be protected through unity. He added that Bangladesh would not allow anyone to become a fascist again and that those who commit injustice would no longer go unpunished.

At the event, Khilafat Majlis Secretary General Dr. Ahmad Abdul Qader delivered the welcome speech, while party leaders, scholars, intellectuals, journalists, and other distinguished guests attended the program.

In his presidential speech, Khilafat Majlis Ameer Maulana Abdul Basit Azad accused the newly formed government of attempting political manipulation over the July charter and referendum issue. He warned that efforts to make the referendum controversial through the courts would have serious consequences.

He said the ruling party, as a signatory to the July charter, must fulfill its commitments. Referring to the referendum results, he claimed that the “Yes” vote had won by a large margin and urged the government to form a Constitutional Reform Council in the first parliamentary session.

Azad also warned that the public would not forgive delays in implementing the July charter and reiterated that the country should never again witness a fascist government.
