A man named Mangal Das, who had been imprisoned for failing to pay a Tk 20,000 electricity bill, has been released after nearly three months with the intervention of Sylhet’s District Commissioner.

Sarwar Alam, District Commissioner and District Magistrate of Sylhet, assisted in arranging bail for Mangal Das after learning about his situation during a prison visit.

Mangal Das, the son of Birsha Das from Keowachhara Tea Garden under Sylhet Airport Police Station, was released from Sylhet Central Jail on Thursday (March 12).

According to reports, a special electricity court ordered his imprisonment on December 18 after he failed to pay an outstanding electricity bill of Tk 20,000. Since then, he had remained in custody.

During a prison inspection on February 23, DC Sarwar Alam met Mangal Das and learned about the circumstances behind his imprisonment. After hearing the details, the DC assured him that he would help arrange bail.

Later, the district administration guaranteed payment of the outstanding electricity bill to the electricity court. Following that assurance, the magistrate of the electricity court granted bail, leading to Mangal Das’s release.
