Vinícius Júnior became the center of discussion despite Real Madrid’s impressive victory, after missing a penalty during their UEFA Champions League clash.
In the first leg of the Round of 16 in the UEFA Champions League at Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, Real Madrid secured a commanding win against Manchester City.
Uruguayan midfielder Federico Valverde scored a stunning hat-trick in the first half, giving Real Madrid a 3–0 lead.
In the second half, Madrid had a chance to extend their advantage when they were awarded a penalty. Vinícius stepped up to take the spot kick, but his attempt was brilliantly saved by Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
The missed penalty quickly sparked criticism after the match. Former Real Madrid and Liverpool FC winger Steve McManaman criticized Vinícius’s penalty technique.
McManaman said he does not like that type of penalty, explaining that if a player attempts a Panenka-style shot, it must result in a goal. He added that such a penalty can look showy and becomes unacceptable if it fails. According to him, Vinícius would likely not have taken such a risk if the score had been 0–0.
Despite the missed penalty, the overall match was dominated by Real Madrid. Valverde’s hat-trick secured a 3–0 victory over Manchester City, putting the Spanish club in a strong position to advance to the quarter-finals.
