Eid grants provided by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman were distributed to sanitation workers involved in waste management under Sylhet City Corporation ahead of Eid al-Fitr.

On Tuesday morning (March 17, 2026), Abdul Qayyum Chowdhury handed over the financial assistance during a ceremony held at the city corporation premises. A total of 827 sanitation workers each received Tk 5,000, amounting to Tk 4.135 million in total.

In addition, supervisors of the waste management department and drivers from the transport division also received Eid assistance from the city corporation’s own fund.

Speaking as the chief guest at the event, Abdul Qayyum Chowdhury praised the Prime Minister and described him as a humanitarian leader. He said sanitation workers in all 12 city corporations across Bangladesh received similar Eid grants this year, which he described as a rare initiative.

He also emphasized the importance of maintaining cleanliness in Sylhet, noting that the city is a major tourism destination visited by travelers from home and abroad. Many visitors come daily to pay respects at the shrines of Shah Jalal and Shah Paran. He added that the Prime Minister has given special instructions to keep Sylhet clean and well organized, and collective efforts are necessary to achieve that goal.

In his remarks as chair of the event, Chief Executive Officer of Sylhet City Corporation Mohammad Rezai Rafin Sarkar said that nearly one million residents of the city generate about 500 tons of waste daily. Managing such a large amount of waste with only 827 workers is extremely challenging, he said, urging citizens to play a responsible role in separating waste at the household level before disposal.

The event was hosted by Chief Waste Management Officer Lt. Col. (Retd.) Eklim Abedin. Senior officials of Sylhet City Corporation were also present.

Earlier, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman had allocated Tk 4.135 million as Eid assistance for sanitation workers in Sylhet City Corporation. The cheque was officially handed over to the city corporation administrator at an event held at the Prime Minister’s Office in the national parliament complex.
