The police have not changed, and complaints are coming again?

The police are held responsible as a single force for the massacre during the protests on July 24.

Hundreds of police stations and vehicles have been burned in the fire of people's anger. The exact number of members who lost their lives remains unclear even to the force itself.

In the changed circumstances after August 5, new people have taken the seats of the old ones. However, police officials are busy maintaining their own positions before any change can be seen in the field.

Even though the people have changed, the behavior has not. In the meantime, several hundred police members have been charged in connection with the events of July and August.

The police have compiled a list of about 124 individuals, of whom 24 have been arrested in various cases so far. Among them are several accused in cases related to the International Crimes Tribunal.

Most members spend their days in fear of arrest in these cases. This raises the question: where is the time to focus on fieldwork? Alongside the fear of legal action, allegations of transfer trade have also emerged.

Political identity and the patronage of certain officials are being prioritized in transfers and postings. Amid all this, the force is engaged in a battle to regain its lost morale.

Bangladesh Police spokesperson Inamul Haque Sagar stated that those who are accused in various cases are being arrested based on specific allegations.

Police members have also been arrested. Everyone is being brought under the law based on specific charges.

After the change in circumstances, it was anticipated that there would be a change in behavior within the force as well.

However, that hope has largely turned to dust. Some have suddenly transformed into deprived and anti-Awami officials overnight. Analysts say that the police have yet to break free from a century-old culture.

Therefore, the force continues to tread the same path as before. No reform will be effective unless there is a separate commission.

Crime and social analyst Dr. Touhidul Haque said that since we want to view the police from a professional perspective and evaluate them accordingly, all aspects of management should be handed over to the police.

They should determine how to manage themselves, and structural changes should be made accordingly.
