The tribunal has set a deadline for completing the investigation against Sheikh Hasina? In the case of crimes against humanity related to the July-August genocide, the tribunal has directed that the investigation report against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina be completed by April 20.
On Tuesday (February 18), a three-member tribunal led by Chairman Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Mojumdar issued this directive. The court issued this order in response to a motion filed by the prosecution.
Additional Chief Prosecutor Mizanul Islam represented the prosecution during the hearing. Earlier, on December 17 of last year, the tribunal ordered the investigation into two cases filed for crimes against humanity related to the July-August genocide to be completed within two months against Sheikh Hasina, Obaidul Quader, and 46 others.
The July-August genocide / 16 individuals, including 11 ministers of the Awami League government, are being tried in the tribunal for crimes against humanity.
In connection with the anti-discrimination student movement, the trial is ongoing in the International Crimes Tribunal against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and others accused of being the instigators and planners of the genocide that occurred in July and August.
To suppress the student and public movement, the Awami League government carried out indiscriminate killings.
Nearly 1,500 people lost their lives during that movement. Faced with the student and public uprising, the 15-year rule of Sheikh Hasina's government came to an end on August 5.
Following this, an interim government led by Nobel laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus took charge of the country, and a decision was made to prosecute the July-August genocide. It is noteworthy that 39 years after independence, the International Crimes Tribunal was established in 2010 to prosecute crimes against humanity from the 1971 war.
The tribunal officially began its operations on March 25 of that year. Since 2015, the tribunal's activities have significantly slowed down.
However, after the fall of the Hasina government, the tribunal's activities have resumed anew.
