Sylhet, Aug. 20: The measles situation in Sylhet is becoming increasingly alarming, with the number of infections and hospital admissions continuing to rise. Another person died of suspected measles in the division over the past 24 hours.
With the latest death, the number of deaths from confirmed and suspected measles cases in Sylhet Division has reached 140 this year.
According to the Health Department’s report dated August 20, no new confirmed measles cases were detected in the past 24 hours. However, 131 suspected measles patients were admitted to different hospitals during the period. Currently, 347 suspected measles patients are receiving treatment at hospitals across the division.
From January 1 to August 20 this year, a total of 988 confirmed measles cases have been recorded in Sylhet Division. Of these, 320 were reported in Sylhet, 153 in Habiganj, 158 in Moulvibazar, and 357 in Sunamganj.
The child who died over the past 24 hours was eight months old. The child died while undergoing treatment at Shaheed Shamsuddin Ahmed Hospital in Sylhet. The child was a resident of Kanaighat.
Sunamganj recorded the highest number of deaths from suspected measles, with 54 fatalities. It was followed by Sylhet with 50, Habiganj with 14, and Moulvibazar with 12. In addition, a total of 10 people have died from confirmed measles across the four districts.
The continued admission of new patients, the growing number of suspected cases undergoing treatment in hospitals, and the ongoing deaths have heightened concerns over the worsening measles situation in Sylhet.
