Clash Over Tk 1,500 Debt Leaves Seven Injured in Sunamganj

Sunamganj, Aug. 20: A violent clash broke out between two groups in Dirai, Sunamganj, over a debt of just Tk 1,500, leaving at least seven people injured.

The clash took place on Wednesday (August 19) afternoon in Ghaghtia village of Dirai municipal town between supporters of Abdul Mukit and Juel Mia. Three of the injured were in critical condition and were sent to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.

The injured were identified as Abdul Hafiz (40), Abdur Rahim (65), Abdul Mukit (45), Imon (21), Ashik Mia (40), Sabbir Mia (26), and Juel (40).

According to police and local sources, Abdul Hafiz and Juel Mia had an argument on August 17 over Tk 1,500 owed to one of them. Following the dispute, supporters of both sides armed themselves with locally made weapons and engaged in a clash at around 5pm on Wednesday, creating tension in the area.

Local residents later rescued the injured and took them to Dirai Upazila Health Complex. The attending physician referred seriously injured Abdur Rahim, Imon and Sabbir Mia to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for better treatment.

Dirai Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Aminul Islam said the clash stemmed from a dispute over the unpaid money.

“As soon as we received the information, police went to the scene and brought the situation under control. The situation in the area is now normal,” he said.

The OC added that neither side has filed a written complaint with the police so far.

“If we receive a complaint, legal action will be taken following an investigation,” he said.
