Habiganj: At least 15 students were injured in a violent clash between two groups of students at Habiganj Medical College over an internal dispute involving senior-junior issues and other disagreements.
Three of the injured were sent to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment, while the others were admitted to Habiganj District Sadar Modern Hospital.
The clash took place around midnight on Wednesday at the college hostel in the Anantapur residential area of the city. The incident has created tension among students throughout the hostel.
According to students, an argument broke out between Tafsir and Sharif Uddin over senior-junior issues at the hostel around midnight. They said the two had been involved in an internal dispute for some time. At one point, the students split into two groups and engaged in a fierce clash using iron rods, cricket stumps and other locally available weapons.
At least 15 students were injured in the clash.
The injured include Tasrif Ahmed, Sharif Uddin, Raihan Raj, Rajab Sani, Fardin Ifti, Sami, Riyad, Abdullah Chowdhury, Samiul Al Arif and Huzaf Saumi, among others.
Riel Sarker, president of the Habiganj Medical College unit of Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, claimed that the incident was not related to a senior-junior dispute. He alleged that several students affiliated with Islami Chhatra Shibir attacked and injured some students supporting the Chhatra Dal.
However, injured student Sharif Uddin denied the claim, saying there was no political involvement in the incident.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Habiganj Sadar Model Police Station Zahidul Haque said police visited the scene after receiving information about the clash.
“Legal action will be taken following an investigation based on any complaint filed in connection with the incident,” he said.
Dr. Rezaul Karim of Habiganj Sadar Modern Hospital said the injured students were receiving treatment at the hospital and that three of them had been referred to Sylhet for advanced medical care.
