Due to instability in global fuel supply caused by the ongoing Iran conflict in the Middle East, filling stations across Bangladesh, including Sylhet, have seen unusually large crowds and a growing tendency among customers to stockpile fuel.
To prevent a long-term fuel shortage, the government has decided to introduce a rationing system for fuel sales starting Sunday (March 8), according to Anindya Islam Amit, State Minister for Energy.
He made the announcement on Friday (March 6) after visiting a petrol pump in Paribagh, Dhaka. The minister also said that written instructions regarding the new system will be sent to petrol stations.
The minister stated that the public concern surrounding fuel supply is understandable due to the ongoing war situation globally. However, he assured that there is no reason to panic, as the country currently has sufficient fuel reserves.
He added that the government has already increased fuel supply several times in recent days, and even buyers have acknowledged purchasing more fuel than usual. He urged the public to avoid panic buying and assured that the government is working to minimize public suffering.
The minister also noted that global fuel prices have increased abnormally, creating additional pressure. Authorities will try to prevent price increases, but if it becomes unavoidable, the government will communicate the situation transparently with the public.
