A new, wider, modern and durable bridge is set to be constructed over the Kapna River in Daubari Union of Gowainghat upazila, Sylhet, replacing the long-neglected and narrow existing bridge.
Minister Ariful Haque Chowdhury has instructed the relevant officials to immediately prepare the design and complete the necessary administrative procedures so that construction of the new bridge can begin quickly to end the long-standing suffering of local residents.
On Friday (July 24), the minister visited the bridge over the Kapna River in person, accompanied by government officials and party leaders and activists. During the inspection, he discussed the current condition of the bridge, the difficulties faced by local residents and the importance of the route for regional connectivity with the officials concerned.
Minister Ariful Haque Chowdhury said ensuring public safety and establishing an uninterrupted communication network are among the government’s top priorities.
“People and vehicles are constantly facing difficulties while using the existing narrow bridge. To accelerate economic activities and social connectivity in the area, it is extremely important to construct a modern, wide and durable bridge here as soon as possible,” he said.
He further said all necessary steps must be taken without further delay to prepare the bridge design, complete the required administrative procedures and begin construction as soon as possible.
He also issued necessary instructions to the engineers and other officials present at the site.
Those present during the inspection included LGED Executive Engineer Mohammad Mamun Khan, Gowainghat Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Ratan Kumar Adhikari, Upazila Engineer Hasib Ahmed, Gowainghat Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Omar Faruk, Upazila BNP General Secretary Mohammad Jasim Uddin and Upazila Jubo Dal Convener Advocate Shahjahan Siddiqui, among others.
Local residents expressed hope that the construction of the new bridge would bring about a major transformation in the communication system of the Gowainghat region.
They said it would end their long-standing travel difficulties and further accelerate economic and social activities in the area. Local residents also expressed their gratitude to the authorities concerned and Minister Ariful Haque Chowdhury for taking the initiative.
