Two fugitives wanted in a murder case over a land dispute in Baniachong, Habiganj, have been arrested in Cumilla in a joint operation by Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-9) and RAB-11.
They were arrested during an operation conducted at around 9:30pm on Thursday (July 23) in the Court Bari-Mainamati area under Sadar Dakshin Model Police Station in Cumilla.
The arrested men were identified as Humayun Mia, 22, son of Chhenu Mia, and Jahangir Mia, 22, son of the late Renu Mia. Both are residents of Kauriyakandi area under Baniachong Police Station in Habiganj.
According to RAB, the victim, Nayan Mia, 37, was a resident of Kauriyakandi village in Baniachong. The accused are also residents of the same area and are relatives of one another.
The victim’s family had been involved in a long-standing dispute with the accused over land. Although local elders had attempted to resolve the dispute, the accused rejected the initiative and became increasingly hostile towards the victim’s family.
As part of the dispute, at around 7pm on June 28, the victim’s wife went to collect water from a tube well near their home. At that time, accused No. 2 Rusena Akter, accused No. 5 Tania Akter and accused No. 3 Imon Mia allegedly began verbally abusing her and behaving aggressively over an issue involving the disposal of waste near the tube well.
Hearing his wife’s cries, Nayan Mia went to the scene. At the call of accused No. 2, other accused individuals allegedly arrived with locally made weapons, including knives, machetes and iron rods, and launched a sudden attack on him.
The attackers allegedly struck Nayan Mia repeatedly in different parts of his body, leaving him seriously injured and bleeding, before fleeing the scene after threatening to kill him.
Local residents later rescued the critically injured Nayan Mia and took him to Habiganj Sadar Hospital, where the attending physician declared him dead after examination.
Following the incident, the victim’s brother filed a murder case with Baniachong Police Station in Habiganj.
After the case was filed, RAB-9 launched a shadow investigation and intensified intelligence surveillance to arrest those involved.
Based on secret information, a joint operational team from RAB-9’s CPC-3 Shaistaganj Camp in Habiganj and RAB-11’s CPC-2 in Cumilla conducted a special operation at around 9:30pm on Thursday in the Court Bari-Mainamati area under Sadar Dakshin Model Police Station.
During the operation, the team arrested the seventh and ninth named accused in the Nayan Mia murder case, who had been on the run.
RAB-9 Additional Superintendent of Police (Media) KM Shahidul Islam Sohag said the arrested suspects had been handed over to the relevant police station for further legal action.
“RAB-9’s intelligence activities and operations will continue to maintain law and order in the country,” he said.
