The government has undertaken several mega development projects to transform Sylhet city into a modern, clean and well-planned urban centre. Commerce, Industry, and Textiles and Jute Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir said the projects would be implemented soon.
He made the remarks at a joint meeting with officials of the Roads and Highways Department and Sylhet City Corporation at Sylhet Circuit House on Saturday (July 25).
Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir said the mega development projects would ensure integrated development across all 42 wards of Sylhet City Corporation while providing sustainable solutions to the city’s long-standing waterlogging and road infrastructure problems.
He said work on several mega projects aimed at ensuring overall development in the 42 wards of Sylhet City Corporation is already underway. Once completed, the projects will transform Sylhet into a more modern, clean and well-organised city. They will also provide effective solutions to major problems related to waterlogging and road infrastructure.
The commerce minister said preserving the city’s streams is essential to permanently addressing waterlogging. He also stressed the importance of regular canal excavation and proper maintenance to ensure the natural flow of water.
He said planned measures to ensure the natural flow of water from its sources to the rivers could significantly reduce flooding and waterlogging during the monsoon.
The minister said the government was working tirelessly to reduce public suffering. As part of these efforts, a project has been undertaken to construct an alternative road from Sylhet Osmani International Airport through Lakkatura to TB Gate to ease traffic congestion in Sylhet city.
A separate project has also been undertaken to widen the Sylhet-Fenchuganj-Moulvibazar road.
He described the initiative as extremely important for the people of Sylhet and instructed officials to complete the construction of major roads and ongoing development projects quickly according to the approved plans.
Once implemented, the projects will further improve the city’s communication network and reduce public suffering, he said.
Those present at the meeting included Sylhet City Corporation Administrator Abdul Qayyum Chowdhury, District Council Administrator Abul Kaher Chowdhury Shamim, Sylhet Development Authority Chairman Rezaul Hasan Koyes Lodi, Deputy Commissioner Abdullah Al Mamun, Additional Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Nurer Zaman Chowdhury, Metropolitan BNP General Secretary Emdad Hossain Chowdhury, Sylhet City Corporation Chief Executive Officer Mohammad Rezai Rafin Sarker and officials of the Roads and Highways Department.
