A young man was killed following a violent clash between two rival groups over the cutting of bamboo in Sylhet's Sadar Upazila under Jalalabad Police Station.
The incident took place at around 11:00 a.m. on Monday (July 27). The victim died at approximately 8:00 p.m. while undergoing treatment at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.
The deceased was identified as Md. Abdullah (25), son of Faruk Ahmed Badulla, a resident of Dighirpar village in Hatkhola Union of Sadar Upazila.
According to local sources, Abdullah's family and the family of their neighbor, Mobashwir Ali, had been involved in a long-standing land dispute. On Monday morning, an argument broke out between the two sides over the cutting of bamboo from a disputed bamboo grove.
The verbal altercation soon escalated into a violent clash. During the confrontation, Abdullah and several other men and women from both sides sustained injuries, including wounds caused by sharp weapons.
Local residents rescued the injured and rushed them to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for treatment. Police from the Shiberbazar Police Outpost arrived at the scene after receiving the information.
Abdullah later succumbed to his injuries at around 8:00 p.m. while receiving treatment at the hospital.
Confirming the incident, Jalalabad Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Shamsul Habib said the clash stemmed from a long-standing land dispute. Police quickly brought the situation under control after arriving at the scene.
He added that Abdullah's body has been kept at the hospital morgue for an autopsy.
The OC further said that no written complaint had been filed as of the latest update. However, police operations are ongoing to arrest those involved, and legal action will be taken once a formal complaint is received.
