A 22-year-old woman from Gaibandha has been staging a sit-in protest at the home of a man in Dowarabazar, Sunamganj, alleging that he deceived her with a promise of marriage and later went into hiding.
According to the woman, Sumaiya Akter (22), a resident of Uttar Sripur (Chapra) village in Sundarganj Upazila of Gaibandha, she traveled to Sunamganj after being assured of marriage by Abdur Razzak, also known as Rezu, a resident of Dharmapur village under Bagla Bazar Union in Dowarabazar Upazila.
Sumaiya claimed that she met Razzak while working at a wholesale produce market in the Mawna area of Dhaka. Despite their significant age difference, she alleged that Razzak developed a relationship with her by promising marriage.
She said that on July 14, Razzak brought her from Mawna to Dowarabazar and later stayed with her for two nights at a residential hotel in Sunamganj town. Afterward, he allegedly persuaded her to return to Dhaka.
According to Sumaiya, after the incident became known, her husband and in-laws refused to accept her back into the family home. She then informed Razzak of her situation, and he allegedly asked her to return to Dowarabazar, assuring her that he would resolve the matter.
Trusting his words, Sumaiya returned to Dowarabazar on Saturday (July 25), leaving behind her two young children. However, she alleged that as soon as she arrived, Razzak switched off his mobile phone and disappeared.
With no place to go, Sumaiya has been staying at Razzak's family home for the past three days, demanding justice and claiming she has been on a hunger strike.
Local residents have expressed concern over the allegations and called for a proper investigation into the matter. They urged law enforcement authorities to take legal action if the allegations are found to be true.
