Habiganj, Bangladesh: At least 15 people, including National Citizen Party (NCP) leaders Nasir Uddin Patwari and Sarjis Alam, were injured after an alleged attack on an NCP procession in Habiganj. The party accused activists of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) of carrying out the assault.
The incident took place on Tuesday (July 28) evening near the Court Mosque area in Habiganj town. Several vehicles carrying journalists covering the event were also vandalized during the violence.
According to witnesses, central leaders of the NCP held a rally in front of Saifur Rahman Town Hall before leaving the venue in a motorcade. As the convoy reached the Court Mosque area, it allegedly came under attack by Chhatra Dal activists, resulting in damage to several vehicles.
A second clash reportedly broke out near Sonali Bank, where members of both groups chased each other. During the confrontation, NCP Chief Coordinator Nasir Uddin Patwari and Northern Region Chief Organizer Sarjis Alam were among at least 15 people injured.
Witnesses said Sarjis Alam took shelter inside the Sonali Bank premises during the attack. Multiple teams of law enforcement officers later arrived at the scene, brought the situation under control, rescued him, and escorted him safely to the Habiganj Circuit House.
Speaking to reporters, Sarjis Alam alleged that activists of Chhatra Dal and Jubo Dal launched a sudden attack on the NCP convoy as party leaders and activists were returning peacefully after concluding their programme.
Habiganj Superintendent of Police Tarek Mahmud said police responded immediately after receiving information about the incident and successfully brought the situation under control. He added that the law and order situation is now stable.
