The National Citizen Party (NCP) has filed a case against 111 people, including 11 named accused and 100 unidentified individuals, over an alleged attack on its central leaders in Habiganj.
The case was filed around 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday (July 29) at the Kamaichhara Police Camp on the Habiganj–Moulvibazar highway by Tanmoy Taher Rubel, Convener of Habiganj District Juboshokti.
An NCP delegation led by Convener Nahid Islam was present when the complaint was submitted.
Earlier on Wednesday, NCP leaders and activists travelling from Sreemangal to Rashidpur in Habiganj to attend a protest rally encountered four police barricades and other obstacles, causing delays of nearly five hours before they reached the police camp to file the case.
Speaking to journalists after filing the complaint, NCP Chief Organizer Nasir Uddin Patwary alleged that activists of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal attacked the party's convoy after the July March programme. He claimed that at least 15 party leaders and activists, including Northern Region Chief Organizer Sarjis Alam, were injured in the attack.
The case names Habiganj District Chhatra Dal President Shah Rajib Ahmed Ringon as the principal accused and Arifuzzaman Riaz, General Secretary of the Brindaban Government College Chhatra Dal unit, as the second accused. Nine other individuals were also named, while another 100 unidentified persons were listed as accused.
According to Patwary, equipment worth approximately Tk 2 million, including laptops, and Tk 500,000 in cash were allegedly looted from the NCP convoy during the attack. The complaint also states that a vehicle valued at around Tk 5 million was vandalized.
The case includes Mahbubul Bari Mubin, Member Secretary of the Habiganj district NCP who was injured in the attack, and the party's Central Coordinator Nahid Uddin Tarek as witnesses.
After filing the case, the NCP central leaders left the Rashidpur area of Habiganj around 10:00 p.m. and departed for Moulvibazar.
Responding to the allegations, Shah Rajib Ahmed Ringon, President of Habiganj District Chhatra Dal, denied the accusations. He claimed that he had previously faced numerous politically motivated cases during the Sheikh Hasina administration and described the new case as false.
"If they (NCP) claim to be July movement activists, I was also a frontline participant in the July movement," Ringon said.
He further alleged that the case demonstrates no difference between the NCP and the previous government in terms of filing false cases, while adding that the ability to file the complaint at a police station reflects that the current government has restored citizens' freedom of expression.
