An attempted abduction of a young man by individuals claiming to be members of the Detective Branch (DB) of police was foiled by local residents in Sylhet. The locals detained one of the alleged abductors after damaging their vehicle and handed him over to police.
The incident took place around 9:00 am on Tuesday (August 4) in the Madina Market area of Sylhet city.
The victim, identified as Emran Hossain (19), son of Nur Islam from Mollargaon area under Mughalgaon Union of Sylhet, works as a showroom employee at a business establishment called Nice Price in Madina Market.
According to reports, three people attempted to forcibly take Emran away by introducing themselves as DB officials. At one point, he managed to jump out of the vehicle and raised an alarm. Hearing his cries, local people chased the vehicle, detained the driver, and vandalized the car.
The detained driver has been identified as Md. Samad (28), a resident of Chhalia area, according to SI Probir of Jalalabad Police Station under Sylhet Metropolitan Police.
Speaking about the incident, Emran told local media that he learned that a group of people had visited his workplace on Monday night claiming to be members of RAB and had searched for him.
He said that he left the showroom before 9:00 am on Tuesday to contact his guardians. At that time, three men got out of a white private car, forcibly introduced themselves as DB officials, and took him into the vehicle.
"After travelling some distance, I managed to jump out of the car and started shouting. Local residents then chased the vehicle, detained one person and damaged the car. I was injured and later went to hospital, so I do not know the full details," he said.
Asked about possible motives behind the incident, Emran said he had recently married someone following a relationship, but his wife's uncles had opposed the marriage and had allegedly been threatening him in various ways. He expressed suspicion that they might be involved in the incident.
Jalalabad Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Shamsul Habib confirmed the incident, saying, "The vehicle was badly damaged by the public. One person has been detained. However, no formal complaint has been filed yet. Necessary legal action is being taken."
