A Bangladeshi youth was shot dead by India’s Border Security Force (BSF) inside Indian territory near the Muraichhara border area in Kulaura upazila of Moulvibazar.
The deceased was identified as Tara Mia, 20, son of Abdul Malek of Muraichhara village in Karmadha Union of Kulaura.
Lieutenant Colonel Sarker Asif Mahmud, commander of the 46 Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Sreemangal Battalion, confirmed the incident on Sunday morning (August 9).
The incident occurred on Saturday night (August 8) in the Maguruli area on the Indian side of the border, adjacent to Muraichhara in Karmadha Union.
According to the BGB commander, Tara Mia and four to five other Bangladeshi youths allegedly entered Indian territory illegally at night. A BSF patrol attempted to stop them, triggering a tense confrontation between the two sides.
At one point, BSF personnel opened fire, killing Tara Mia at the scene. The others accompanying him fled and returned to Bangladesh.
Lieutenant Colonel Sarker Asif Mahmud said Tara Mia had also been named as an accused in a smuggling case filed with Kulaura Police Station.
The BGB said it was in contact with the relevant authorities and collecting further information to establish the details surrounding the incident.
