The measles situation in Sylhet Division remains concerning, with one more person dying after being suspected of having measles in the past 24 hours. During the same period, 24 new cases were confirmed. With the latest cases, the number of confirmed measles patients in the division this year has risen to 876. Including both suspected and confirmed cases, the death toll has reached 128.
The figures were reported in the daily update issued by the Office of the Divisional Director of Health on August 11. According to the report, 92 new suspected measles patients were admitted to hospitals across the division in the past 24 hours. A total of 294 suspected patients are currently receiving treatment at different hospitals.
Health department data show that from January 1 to August 11, a total of 876 measles cases have been confirmed in Sylhet Division, including the 24 newly detected cases. Of these, 287 cases were reported in Sylhet district, 116 in Habiganj, 120 in Moulvibazar and 353—the highest number—in Sunamganj. Two of the confirmed cases in Habiganj were identified as rubella patients.
Of the 92 suspected measles patients admitted over the past 24 hours, 31 were admitted to Shaheed Shamsuddin Ahmed Hospital, 35 to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, two to Ragib-Rabeya Medical College Hospital, nine to Moulvibazar District Sadar Hospital and 15 to Sunamganj District Sadar Hospital.
At present, 294 suspected measles patients are undergoing treatment at hospitals across Sylhet Division. Of them, 137 are at Shaheed Shamsuddin Ahmed Hospital and 79 at Osmani Medical College Hospital. In addition, 14 patients are being treated at Ragib-Rabeya Medical College Hospital, six at North East Hospital, four at Golapganj Upazila Health Complex, two at Beanibazar Upazila Health Complex, 34 at Sunamganj District Sadar Hospital, two at Habiganj District Sadar Hospital and 16 at Moulvibazar District Sadar Hospital.
Another person died of suspected measles in the past 24 hours. According to the health department report, the deceased was a seven-month-old child from Companyganj upazila of Sylhet. The child had been undergoing treatment at Osmani Medical College Hospital.
District-wise, 42 people have so far died of suspected measles in Sylhet, 16 in Habiganj, 12 in Moulvibazar and 52 in Sunamganj. This brings the total number of deaths from suspected measles across the four districts to 122.
Meanwhile, six deaths have been recorded among confirmed measles patients—four in Sylhet, one in Moulvibazar and one in Sunamganj. No death from confirmed measles has been reported in Habiganj. Combining suspected and confirmed cases, the total number of deaths in Sylhet Division stands at 128.
Sunamganj is far ahead of the other three districts in terms of confirmed measles cases this year. A total of 353 cases have been confirmed in the district so far, followed by 287 in Sylhet, 120 in Moulvibazar and 116 in Habiganj.
