Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has resigned from the party after the BNP finalised his nomination as its candidate for the country’s 23rd presidential election, according to reports.
A BNP source said the decision to nominate Mirza Fakhrul was finalised at a meeting between the party’s top and senior leaders held at the Secretariat at around 9am on Thursday (August 13). The meeting was chaired by Prime Minister and BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman.
Following the decision, Mirza Fakhrul resigned as the party’s secretary general and from the BNP’s Standing Committee. The matter was confirmed by the party’s Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.
Speaking to reporters, Rizvi said Mirza Fakhrul had resigned from his positions as BNP secretary general and Minister of Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives after being nominated for the presidency.
The presidential election will be held on August 20 in the session chamber of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.
According to the Election Commission’s schedule, nomination papers for the presidential election were to be submitted between 10am and 4pm on August 13. The nomination papers will be scrutinised at the Election Commission building from 10am on August 16.
The deadline for withdrawing candidacy is 4pm on August 18.
