Police have arrested Arindam Chowdhury Opu, 43, former convener of the now-banned Shalla Upazila Chhatra League and recently retired vice-chairman of the Shalla Upazila Parishad, in a political case under the ongoing “Operation Devil Hunt” in Sunamganj’s Shalla upazila.
He was arrested during a late-night operation on Wednesday while he was on his way to his residence in Shalla town.
Opu is the son of late Anil Chowdhury of Nainda village in Bahara Union No. 3.
According to police sources, Opu had allegedly been attempting to create unrest in the area ahead of August 15. Police said they arrested him during an operation based on information that he was involved in activities aimed at disrupting public order.
The arrested man is a former convener of the banned Shalla Upazila Chhatra League and former vice-chairman of the Upazila Parishad. A case was filed against him under Sections 15(3) and 25(D) of the Special Powers Act, 1974.
Following his arrest, Opu was sent to a Sunamganj court.
Shawkat Ali, officer-in-charge (additional charge) of Shalla Police Station, confirmed the arrest.
“Arindam Chowdhury Opu was allegedly planning various activities to create an unstable situation in the area ahead of August 15. Acting on a tip-off, a skilled police team conducted a late-night operation and arrested him and brought him to the police station,” he said.
“We filed a case against him under the Special Powers Act, 1974, and sent him to the Sunamganj court. Police operations in Shalla will continue to bring other offenders under the law,” the officer added.
