Md. Abdus Sattar, who was killed along with his wife and domestic worker in Sylhet’s Raynagar Mitali residential area, was known locally as a respected elderly man. He was also known as a leader in both the Awami League and the business community.
Sattar was killed at his residence on the second floor of Nikunja Villa, House No. 111, in Raynagar Mitali on Wednesday morning, along with his wife, Suraiya Begum, and domestic worker Tahmina.
Sources said Sattar had four children—one son and one daughter living in the United States and two daughters residing in the United Kingdom.
He owned two adjacent three-storey houses in the Raynagar Mitali residential area. He lived on the second floor of Nikunja Villa, while the remaining flats in the two buildings were rented out.
The triple murder cast a pall of grief over the Raynagar area. Local residents described Sattar as a kind and well-respected person who had no known disputes with anyone in the neighbourhood.
Sources said Sattar’s ancestral home was in Akhakhajna of Beanibazar. He was one of the long-time residents of the Mitali residential area.
A businessman by profession, Sattar operated a business establishment in Kalighat in Sylhet city. He was also an elected director of the Sylhet Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Sattar had also been active in politics for many years and was involved with the Awami League. He had stepped away from active politics in recent years due to his age. At the time of his death, he was a member of the advisory council of Ward No. 19 of the Sylhet Metropolitan Awami League.
