Dipu Moni’s Husband Dies, Lawyer to Seek Her Release on Parole

Taufiq Newaz, husband of former Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni, has died. Dipu Moni, who is currently detained at Munshiganj District Jail, will be released on parole to attend her husband’s funeral, her lawyer Gazi Faisal Islam has confirmed.

Taufiq Newaz, 76, died while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in the capital at around 10:30pm on Tuesday (August 18).

He had been suffering from prolonged illness and had been using a wheelchair for mobility. His death has cast a pall of grief among relatives and well-wishers. Dipu Moni and Taufiq Newaz have one daughter.

Confirming the death, Dipu Moni’s lawyer Gazi Faisal Islam told Kalbela that Taufiq Newaz died while receiving treatment on Tuesday night.

He said, “Dipu Moni was arrested and is currently detained at Munshiganj District Jail. We will apply to the Munshiganj district administration on Wednesday seeking her release on parole.”

Dipu Moni was arrested from the Baridhara DOHS area of the capital on the night of August 19, 2024, following the fall of the Awami League government after the mass uprising of 2024. She has remained in custody since then.

More than 60 cases have reportedly been filed against Dipu Moni.
