Body of Missing Child Recovered from River in Sunamganj

The body of a 10-year-old girl, Rukaiya Nur, who went missing after falling from a tourist houseboat into the Baulai River in Tahirpur, Sunamganj, was recovered on Sunday morning (August 23), two days after the incident.

Her body was found floating in the river near Pirojpur village in Balijuri Union of the upazila.

Rukaiya Nur was the daughter of Dr Shahnur Rahman, a resident of Golchamot No. 2 Road area under Kotwali Police Station in Faridpur.

According to reports, 20 tourists set out from Madhyanagar towards the Jadukata River in a houseboat named Safina A Luxury Water Villa on Friday (August 21). While the boat was passing over the Baulai River near Dakshinkul Ferry Ghat in Tahirpur, Rukaiya suddenly fell into the river.

Tourist Sajjad Hossain Siam, who was on the houseboat, said Rukaiya fell into the river at around 2:30pm without her family members noticing. After she went missing, a diving team from the Sunamganj Fire Service and local residents launched a search operation. Several attempts were also made using fishing nets, but she could not be located that day.

On Sunday morning, locals spotted Rukaiya’s body floating in the Baulai River near Pirojpur village and informed the police. Police then went to the scene and took steps to recover the body.

Tahirpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Faruk Ahmed said they had received information that the body of the child who went missing after falling from a tourist houseboat had surfaced in the river. The body would be recovered and further legal procedures would be taken, he said.
