Nine cases have been filed over the past eight months in connection with various rallies and meetings allegedly organised by the Awami League and its affiliated organisations, whose activities have been banned.
The cases were filed at six police stations in Sylhet Metropolitan Police area, naming 150 individuals from the Awami League, Bangladesh Chhatra League and other affiliated organisations as accused. More than 500 unidentified individuals have also been accused in the cases.
According to police, the cases were filed under Sections 13(9)(3)10-11-12-13 of the Anti-Terrorism Act 2009, as amended, with police acting as the complainant.
The nine cases were filed between January and August this year over various processions and meetings allegedly organised by the banned Awami League, Chhatra League and their affiliated organisations in the six metropolitan police stations.
A total of 150 people were named as accused in the cases, while more than 500 others were listed as unidentified accused. Police have so far arrested 94 people, including those named in the cases and unidentified accused.
Mohammad Manzurul Alam, additional deputy commissioner (media) of Sylhet Metropolitan Police, said legal action was being taken over rallies, meetings and other activities of the banned organisation.
“Cases have been filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act in connection with these incidents. Legal action is being taken against those named in the case statements and against anyone whose involvement is established during the investigation. Several people have already been arrested in the cases,” he said.
He added that police surveillance and operations were continuing to maintain law and order.
