Mohammed Shahabuddin has resigned from the post of President, citing physical illness.
He resigned on Friday (July 24) afternoon. As the office of the president became vacant, National Parliament Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed assumed the responsibilities of acting president in accordance with the Constitution.
Hafiz Uddin himself disclosed the information at an emergency press conference held at the National Parliament’s oath-taking room on Friday afternoon.
“President Mohammed Shahabuddin has submitted his resignation. His resignation has been accepted. In accordance with the Constitution, I have assumed the responsibilities of the president,” Hafiz Uddin Ahmed said.
He further said, “On the day I took the oath as speaker, I also took the oath as acting president, if necessary.”
He also said that the deputy speaker similarly takes the speaker’s oath during the oath-taking ceremony.
Deputy Speaker of Parliament Kaiser Kamal, Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni, Attorney General Ruhul Quddus Talukder and officials of the Parliament Secretariat were present at the press conference.
