If Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman, National Citizen Party leader Nahid Islam and Bangladesh Khilafat Majlis Ameer Shaikhul Hadith Mamunul Haque unite, the fall of the government will become inevitable within a week, said Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) President Colonel (retd) Oli Ahmed, Bir Bikram.
“The government will have no way to escape,” he said.
He made the remarks while delivering the chairperson’s speech at a divisional mass rally organised by an 11-party alliance at the Sylhet Government Alia Madrasa field on Saturday (July 25). The rally was held to demand justice for the July mass killings, constitutional reforms and implementation of the referendum verdict.
Warning the current government, Colonel Oli Ahmed said that if the three leaders joined forces, they would be capable of bringing between 2 million and 3 million people to a rally in Dhaka at any time.
“They can block the roads in Tongi, Sayedabad and Mirpur. Where will you be in the country then? You need to understand this. Do not be influenced by others. Think about the people of the country,” he said.
Addressing the prime minister, Colonel Oli Ahmed said the same person should not simultaneously hold the positions of prime minister, leader of Parliament and head of a political party.
“The 11-party alliance had proposed this to you, but you did not accept it. Become the prime minister of the people of the country, not the prime minister of the BNP,” he said.
In his speech, Oli Ahmed further said corruption and extortion had not stopped under the current government. He also alleged that the law-and-order situation had deteriorated severely and the prices of essential commodities had increased.
“Your party members are guarding the establishments of corrupt businessmen,” he alleged.
He further said that if the hopes and aspirations of the people were not reflected, there would be no option left in the future other than the slogan: “One point, one demand—when will this government go?”
Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman was the chief guest at the rally.
Among the special guests were National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener and Chief Whip of the Opposition Nahid Islam MP, Khilafat Majlis Ameer Maulana Muminul Haque, 11-party alliance coordinator and Jamaat Assistant Secretary General Hamidur Rahman Azad, acting Ameer of the Nezame Islam Party Abdul Qayyum Subhani, Khilafat Andolan Ameer Habibullah Miaji, AB Party Chairman Mujibur Rahman Manju, Labour Party Chairman Dr Mostafizur Rahman Iran, JAGPA spokesperson Rashed Pradhan and Bangladesh Development Party Chairman AKM Amzadul Islam Chan.
