Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) Director General AKM Shahidur Rahman has stated that law enforcement agencies will not allow harassment or suffering of ordinary citizens under the guise of protests or demands.
He made the remarks on Friday (February 20) at around 11:20 AM while briefing reporters at the Central Shaheed Minar premises on the overall law and order situation marking Shaheed Day and International Mother Language Day, as well as the special nationwide security measures undertaken by RAB.
Commitment to Maintaining Stability
The RAB chief acknowledged that the country experienced a fragile law and order situation following the events of July and August over the past year and a half.
“Since that time, we have assured the nation through the media that we would bring the law and order situation under control,” he said. “We promised to create an environment conducive to holding a free and fair election — and we have been able to achieve that.”
He emphasized that through collective efforts, the nation was able to witness a peaceful electoral process.
“We want to assure the people that the country’s law and order situation will continue to improve gradually. We are confident that we will be able to further control criminal activities,” he added.
Zero Tolerance for Disruption
Shahidur Rahman made it clear that any attempts to disturb public order would be dealt with firmly.
“We remain vigilant at all times to ensure that the law and order situation is not disrupted in any way,” he said. “We want to clearly state that in the name of demands or movements, no one will be allowed to oppress ordinary citizens or hold them hostage.”
The statement appears to reflect growing concerns over disruptive demonstrations that may affect public movement and daily life.
Ensuring Normal Life for Citizens
The RAB Director General reiterated that the primary goal of law enforcement agencies is to ensure that citizens can move freely and continue their daily activities without obstruction.
“We want the people of this country to live and move about without fear or inconvenience. We will remain alert to ensure that no barriers arise in their normal way of life,” he stated.
Call for Media and Public Support
Addressing journalists, the RAB chief sought cooperation from both the media and the public.
“With your support and the cooperation of the people, we hope to bring the country’s law and order situation under even better control. Together, we aim to build a safe and stable nation,” he said.
Security Measures on Shaheed Day
RAB officials confirmed that special security arrangements were deployed across the country to ensure peaceful observance of Shaheed Day and International Mother Language Day, particularly in key public gathering locations such as the Central Shaheed Minar.
Law enforcement agencies remained on high alert to prevent any untoward incidents.
