Former First Lady Melania Trump has donated the gown she wore at her second inauguration to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, adding it to the institution’s prestigious “First Ladies Collection.”
Melania formally presented the dress on Friday, continuing a long-standing tradition in which First Ladies contribute their inaugural attire to the Smithsonian. The gown now joins more than two dozen historic dresses preserved in the museum’s exhibition honoring America’s First Ladies.
This marks the second inaugural gown Melania Trump has donated, following her first contribution after the 2017 inauguration.
A Historic Addition to the “First Ladies Collection”
The gown was worn on the evening of January 20, 2025, during the presidential inauguration celebrations. The sleeveless white gown, featuring black detailing along the edges, was paired with a striking black neckpiece adorned with a replica of a Harry Winston diamond brooch.
During the presentation ceremony, the dress was displayed on a mannequin at the event stage before being moved to the exhibition hall. Later, Melania and the gown’s designer, Hervé Pierre, viewed the dress in its new glass display case alongside other historic inaugural gowns.
The Smithsonian’s First Ladies Collection is considered one of the museum’s most popular and symbolic exhibits, offering a visual timeline of American political history through fashion.
“More Than Just a Dress,” Says Melania
Speaking at the handover ceremony, Melania Trump emphasized the deeper meaning behind the gown and her appreciation for fashion design.
“It is more than just a dress,” she said. “Every thread, every stitch, and every precise fold reflects more than 50 years of education, experience, and craftsmanship.”
She also highlighted a symbolic detail in the design. According to Melania, the carefully placed black English letter “Z” on the front of the gown represents decades of personal memories, influences, and experiences from earlier stages of her life.
“These stories are forever woven into every elegant and structured fold of the gown,” she added.
A Statement of Modern Elegance
Melania described fashion design as a form of creative expression and characterized the gown’s white and black color palette as creating “an emotional atmosphere.”
She referred to the dress as:
-
Modern
-
Bold
-
Dignified
-
Exceptionally refined
The minimalist yet dramatic contrast between black and white was intended to project both strength and sophistication — qualities she has frequently associated with her public image.
A Tradition Among First Ladies
For decades, First Ladies have donated their inaugural gowns to the Smithsonian as part of a tradition that blends history, politics, and fashion.
The First Ladies Collection serves as a historical archive of American ceremonial culture, documenting changing design trends and the evolving public roles of presidential spouses.
With Melania Trump’s latest contribution, the exhibit continues to expand its representation of contemporary American political history.
“An Unbelievable Moment”
When asked by reporters how she felt seeing her gown displayed among historic garments, Melania described the experience as deeply meaningful.
“It’s unbelievable,” she said. “This is a historic moment.”
Her reaction underscored the symbolic nature of the donation — not only as a personal milestone but also as part of a broader historical narrative.
