Dhaka Metropolitan Police Acting Commissioner Mohammad Sarwar has instructed traffic police to prevent battery-operated rickshaws from entering major roads in the capital.

He said traffic police are actively enforcing the directive, while regular eviction drives are being conducted against illegal encroachments on footpaths and roads.

The instruction was given on Tuesday (March 3) at a coordination meeting held at the DMP headquarters conference room regarding security arrangements for banks and shopping malls during Ramadan, prevention of adulterated food, price control, and traffic management across Dhaka.

The DMP Commissioner noted that traffic congestion intensifies in the capital before iftar during Ramadan. To ensure residents can reach their destinations on time, senior DMP officials are leading traffic and crime division members along with additional forces. Officers are even breaking their fast on the streets to keep traffic flowing smoothly.

He added that relevant DMP units are actively working to prevent social media misuse and cybercrime. Expressing optimism, he said Ramadan will conclude peacefully with everyone’s cooperation.

At the meeting, Additional Police Commissioner (Crime and Operations) S.N. Md. Nazrul Islam stated that no major untoward incidents have occurred in Dhaka so far during Ramadan. If the remaining days pass peacefully, Eid celebrations can be observed smoothly.

Addressing business leaders, he urged them to bring shops, markets, and business establishments under CCTV surveillance. This would enhance security and assist police in crime prevention efforts.

He also requested citizens to contact the nearest police station or call the national emergency helpline 999 for assistance. Ahead of Eid, he encouraged people to use DMP’s escort service for transporting cash and valuables safely.
