The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has announced that before selling or handing over a mobile phone, its registration must be cancelled (de-registered).

This information was shared in a notice issued on Tuesday (3 February) by the Spectrum Division of BTRC.

The notice said that to ensure transparency and security in mobile phone management across the country, the NEIR system has been fully implemented since 1 January. With the launch of NEIR, all mobile phones currently active on Bangladesh’s mobile networks have been automatically registered. This will help authorities take effective steps to control the use of illegal and stolen mobile phones.

The notice further stated that even in cases of changing SIM cards in a phone registered under someone’s name, or before transferring or selling the phone to another person, the handset must first be de-registered from the National ID (NID).

For the de-registration process, BTRC said users will need the last 4 digits of their NID or passport number, based on the document used when purchasing the SIM.

For detailed information about de-registration, people have been asked to visit BTRC’s website: neir.btrc.gov.bd. Assistance is also available by calling BTRC’s call center at 100, or by contacting the nearest customer care center of the relevant mobile operator.
